Google Translate Live Translate Android XR Upgrade Adds Listening Modes

Google Translate's Live Translate Android XR upgrade could give future Android XR glasses users a choice: translate only the person facing them, or every voice within earshot. Code inside an unreleased build of the Google Translate app describes a "Listening area" setting built specifically for Android XR glasses, according to an Android Authority teardown published today. The setting exists only in code strings, with no screenshots, demo, or confirmation from Google that it will ship as described.

Still, the labels are specific enough to sketch two different approaches to a problem glasses face that phones don't: there's no screen to point at whoever's speaking.

That work has now surfaced in two separate Android Authority teardowns, one last year and one today. Google itself demoed live two-person translation on the glasses at I/O 2025, calling it "subtitles for the real world" in a company blog post from last year.

The Android XR Live Translate listening-area controls

The find comes from version 10.32.66 of the Google Translate Android app. Buried in its Translation settings is a string labeled "Listening area (Glasses only)," per Android Authority. The label suggests the control is meant for Android XR glasses, not for phones or other devices running the same app.

Underneath that header sit two named options. "Front only" is described as translating "speech directly in front of you." "Surrounding area" is described as translating "all speech in the nearby area," according to the same report. Together, the two options describe a choice between speech directly ahead of the wearer and speech anywhere nearby, nothing more elaborate than that.

Android Authority saw only these labels and descriptions in code, with no visuals of the feature running and no build to test. A previous teardown had turned up a general "Glasses" entry in Translate's device picker; these newer strings, by contrast, describe two distinct listening behaviors rather than one broad audio toggle.

Why whose voice to translate is the harder problem

Android Authority offers an informed reading of how the two modes might work, without confirming implementation details. Surrounding-area mode could tap into the full array of microphones built into Android XR devices, the outlet suggests, while Front-only appears tailored for one-on-one exchanges and could filter out background noise to isolate a single speaker.

That distinction maps onto hardware Google has already described in public. Android XR glasses are built around a camera, microphones, and speakers, paired with a phone connection and an optional in-lens display for showing information privately, according to Google when it demoed the platform last year.

On a foldable Pixel phone, Google's Dual Screen mode puts translations on both the inside and outside screens, according to Google's support page, available on the Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. That's a different arrangement than what Google documents for Android XR glasses, which have an optional in-lens display instead, visible only to the wearer. The labels suggest two different approaches to a related problem: without a screen to turn toward someone else, software has to decide whose voice matters.

That's the open question the two listening modes raise, not one the code strings resolve. Whether Surrounding-area mode can reliably separate overlapping conversations, or whether Front-only adds a lag while isolating one voice from ambient noise, isn't something a string of text can answer. Those questions need a working build, and none exists yet.

A broader pattern of Live Translate changes, not all of them XR-exclusive

The Listening area strings don't exist in isolation. They follow an Android Authority teardown from last year that found several other changes brewing in the same app, some tied to glasses and some not.

That earlier report found that Live Translate currently stops working the moment someone switches away from the Translate app. Code in that build included notification strings reading "Speech translation is ongoing," "Speech translation is paused," and "Translating speech in the background," paired with a resume button, similar to how Gemini Live behaves when a user switches to another app. Together, the strings suggested translation might continue while a user looked at other apps, rather than cutting off the moment they left Translate.

The same teardown found a bottom sheet with three audio controls for each language in a conversation: a mute button, a speaker button, and a headphones button. The report also indicated a fourth option might be added, though it didn't specify what that option would do. Alongside those controls, the code listed four entries for Translate's device picker: "Glasses," "Headphones," "Off," and "This device," letting a user choose where translated audio plays.

None of that reporting tied these particular changes to XR glasses specifically, aside from the glasses entry itself. They read as general Live Translate upgrades that may also benefit a hands-free wearable, not confirmed pieces of one feature bundle alongside Listening area.

Live Translation itself isn't new. Google added it to the Translate app in August 2025, and the earlier report said the feature runs on Gemini and supports real-time, back-and-forth conversation, according to Android Authority.

What's actually available now, and what isn't

The Samsung Galaxy XR is currently the only commercially available Android XR device, according to Android Authority. The new setting, though, is explicitly labeled "Glasses only." The reporting does not identify a shipping pair of Android XR glasses compatible with this setting, so whether it works on Galaxy XR or on anything else remains unconfirmed.

Smart glasses from brands including Gentle Monster and Warby Parker are expected to expand the Android XR lineup, the same report notes, though no shipping date or confirmed compatibility with Listening area has surfaced.

Google's own timeline adds context but not specifics. At I/O 2025, the company said developers would be able to start building for Android XR, covering both headsets and glasses, later that year, according to Google's announcement. That's Google's stated platform timetable, not a translation-specific one, and it says nothing about when, or whether, features like Listening area will follow.

For now, there's a translation setting written for glasses whose availability and compatibility remain unconfirmed. It matters less as something to try this month than as a signal of where Google is putting engineering effort while the hardware catches up.

What comes next

The code strings and the two teardowns behind them are evidence that Google is developing a Live Translate upgrade for Android XR, not proof that a finished feature is scheduled to launch.

Plenty remains unanswered. Android Authority's reporting doesn't establish how well Surrounding-area mode would separate overlapping speakers, what latency either mode might add, or how Google would handle consent and data collection for a mode designed to listen to everyone nearby rather than just a conversation partner. Those are questions the concept raises, not claims anyone has made about the implementation.

A useful next signal would be whether "Listening area" turns up in a public Translate release, and whether Google names compatible glasses rather than leaving the setting tied to hardware whose availability and compatibility Google has not yet confirmed.
